The Mystical Castle of Grépon by W. T. Horton -- coffee mug

$11.99

Although the manor or castle of Grépon is indicated on a map produced in 1650, it no longer exists – perhaps it never did. This mystical drawing by W.T. Horton was published ten years after the artist’s death by his friend Roger Ingpen.

The work of W. T. Horton is often compared to that of Aubrey Beardsley. Coincidentally, they both attended the same grammar school in Brighton, and when the two met, Beardsley had encouraging words for Horton.

Horton’s drawings have been described as direct, clear, powerful, and original – they are quite minimalist. The artist believed his work was inspired by occult influences.

He seems to have been somewhat of a loner and was a friend of fellow mystic W. B. Yeats, who sponsored his initiation into Golden Dawn occult society in 1896.

Here's a further design, also somewhat mystical, by W. T. Horton. It's called "Dawn."
