Runes -- a Norse poster

This poster features a design called Aegishjalmr, the Helm of Awe or Helm of Terror. Its purpose was to create fear, protect warriors in battle, and help them to victory. The runes on this poster are Icelandic.

In the Volsunga Saga, after Sigurd slays the dragon Fafnir he takes the Helm of Awe from the dragon's hoard.

From the Poetic Edda:

The Helm of Awe
I wore before the sons of men
In defense of my treasure;
Amongst all, I alone was strong,
I thought to myself,
For I found no power a match for my own.

Here's a basic introduction to runes by an instructor of Nordic Studies at the University of Colorado:

A perfect poster for those who feel Viking blood in their veins and take pride in their Scandinavian heritage
